3 Vienna June 05 BWR The Library Act:The objective is to promote equal opportunities among citizens for personal cultivation, for literary and cultural pursuits, for continuous development of knowledge, personal skills and civic skills, for internationalisation and for lifelong learning-- to promote the development of virtual and interactive network services and their educational and cultural contents.

4 Vienna June 05 BWR the Library Policy Programme: Public libraries build and promote the community spirit and strengthen democracy. They are learning environments, and they promote comprehensive literacy as well as media or digital literacy. They network with partners and contribute to the success and welfare of their region.

5 Vienna June 05 BWR From the Library Strategy 2010 During the next few years the significance of the library will increase as a place for learning and experiences as a conveyor of diverse knowledge and culture, with a view to mastering and organizing information according to user needs.

6 Vienna June 05 BWR Libraries network 85 % of libraries belong to a regional network with joint computer systems and catalogues on the web. Targeted services are produced in cooperation, with links to services produced by other library networks. Cooperation with kindergartens, schools, local museums and archives - as cultural meeting places with global access.

7 Vienna June 05 BWR Basic services The provincial governments´ report on printed material in the libraries: 73 % of library loans are book loans, 85 % of acquisitions are books. Acquisition recommendations in the Library Programme: 400 books/1000 inhab/year. Budgets vary a lot in the municipalities - "equal opportunities among citizens" ?
