2 About the research Aims: to study the image created by the travel descriptions of Finnish and Sami people and to compare it with the image created by the translations -> auto- and hetero-image to see what kind of (implicit) ideological meanings the texts contain and transmit to their readers

3 Research material three French travel descriptions from 17th to 19th century and their 20th-century Finnish translations writers: Jean-Francois Regnard, Réginald Outhier and Xavier Marmier translations: Marja Itkonen-Kaila about 550 pages

4 Regnard Jean-François Regnard (1655-1709): a nobleman and a comedy-writer Voyage de Laponie, 1731 (Retki Lappiin, 1982): a month’s travel to Lapland in 1681: the travel description published posthumously

5 Outhier Réginald Outhier (1694-1774): a priest and a scientist Journal d’un voyage au Nord, 1744 (Matka Pohjan perille, 1975): in Lapland from summer 1736 to spring 1737 as a member of Maupertuis’s scientific expedition

6 Marmier Xavier Marmier (1808-1892): a novelist and a professor of literature Relation du voyage, 1843 (Pohjoinen maa, 1999): several travels to Finland and Lapland
