Jussi Heinimö Lappeenranta University of Technology Bioenergian tulevaisuus Itä-Suomessa Joensuu 12.12.2006 IEA Bioenergy Task 40 Sustainable International Bioenergy Trade: securing supply and demand

Task 40: Sustainable International Bioenergy trade Global long-term production potential of biomass A Summary of the results from 13 studies that have evaluated the potential to harvest energy from biomass up to 2100 (Berndes et al., 2003)

Task 40: Sustainable International Bioenergy trade Phases in bio-energy use and market development 1.Waste treatment and process residues; use on site, low costs 2.Local use of (more expensive) forest and agricultural residues; some infrastructure development 3.Regional biomass markets, larger scale utilisation, increasingly complex logistics; supportive policies needed 4.National markets with complex set of suppliers and buyers; often increased availability 5.Increasing scale, cross-border flows; role for cultivated biomass; bilateral activities 6.Global commodity market; pricing mechanisms; complex interlinkages with existing markets (food, forestry, feedstocks) Source: A. Faaij et. al. Rome 2004

Task 40: Sustainable International Bioenergy trade Aim of the task The future vision on global bioenergy trade is that it develops overtime into a real “commodity market” which will secure supply and demand in a sustainable way; sustainability brings a key factor for long-term security Investigate what is needed to create a “commodity market” for bio-energy Contribute to the development of sustainable bio- energy markets on short and on long term and on different scale levels

Task 40: Sustainable International Bioenergy trade Current status IEA Task 40 Members: Belgium, Laborelec/Electrabel Brazil, State university of Campinas Canada, Climate Change solutions Finland, Lappeenranta University of Technology Germany, ÖKÖ Institute Italy, ETA-Florence The Netherlands, Utrech University & Essent Eergy Trading Norway, Enova Sweden, Tall Oil AB United Kindom, Imperial College London Affiliated international bodies: FAO & World Bank

Task 40: Sustainable International Bioenergy trade Deliverables IEA Task 40 2004-2006 1.Mapping market experience. 2.Advice on trade, e.g. (removal of) barriers, opportunities and policy actions 3.Improve understanding of markets (modelling). 4.Supply chain analyses 5.Certification systems 6.Initiate pilot projects 7.Case studies and impact analyses 8.Evaluation of markets (Bio-ethanol, pellets, bio-oil) 9.Dissemination (website, leaflets, numerous lectures)

Task 40: Sustainable International Bioenergy trade Current status IEA Task 40 For more information, see : www.bioenergytrade.org: Detailed activities Background information Results (e.g. country reports, analyses) Events (Brazil ‘05, Norway ’06, Finland ’06, Netherlands -07, Germany -07).

Task 40: Sustainable International Bioenergy trade Task 40 Suomen kannalta Mahdollisuus vaikuttamaa Taskin sisältöön ja tuoda esiin suomalaisten yritysten kannalta tärkeitä näkökantoja, kuten Suomen kannalta tärkeänä kysymyksenä puuraaka- aineen materiaali- ja energiakäytön kysymykset Taskin intressiryhmä on Suomessa laaja: polttoaineen tuottajat, metsäteollisuus ja energiayhtiöt ja yritykset ovat ilmaisseet kiinnostuksensa seurata Taskin etenemistä ja saada näkemyksiään esiin Taskin kautta Osallistumisen kautta tarjoutuu mukaan pääsy Taskin piirissä suunnitteilla oleviin tutkimushankkeisiin Task työskentelyn kautta tapahtuvan verkostoitumisen tarjoamat hyödyt mm. osaamisen tason nostossa ja kansainvälisissä tutkimushankkeissa
